QUESTION
I have just reached the age of puberty and I have questions regarding the Masa'il that women should know regarding the different types of bleeding. I would be very grateful if you could shed light on the subject. Jazakallah khairan
ANSWER
There are 3 types of Blood, that come out of a woman's womb, these are as follows:
(a) Haiz (Menses)
(b) Istehadha (Bleeding from the womb in between ordinary periods)
(c) Nifaas (Bleeding after child birth)
HAIZ (MENSES)
Haiz (Menses) is the Blood that normally comes out from the woman's womb every month. The minimum duration is 3 days and 3 nights and its maximum duration is 10 days and 10 nights.
NOTE: If a woman is sure that flow of blood is not from the womb, but from some wound or from the anus, then the bleeding is not Haiz, but Istehadha.
- The continuous flow of blood is not necessary for haiz if blood flowed for a while in the beginning and then stopped and flowed again on the second or third day then according to shari'at it is regarded as one continuous menstrual flow.
- If someone bleeds, for 3 or 4 days, but in some months bleeding extends for more than this period, but not more than 10 days then, it is all menses. If it exceeded more than 10 days, then it is "Istehadha" for the days more than what it used to normally bleed.
For example, if it habitually bleeds for 3 days, but in some months it bleeds for 9 to 1 0 clays, then it is all menses. But if it exceeds even a little more than 10 days and nights, then only 3 days are those of menses and the rest are those of 'Istehadha'.
ISTEHADHA
Istehadha is the blood that comes out of the woman's vagina due to illness or some disease. For example if blood came out for any period less than 3 days and 3 nights then this blood is not haiz. As the least duration of haiz is 3 days and 3 nights and this blood came but for a period less than 3 days and 3 nights. For example if the blood came out for a period more than 10 days and 10 nights, the blood after the 1 0 day and nights will not be haiz as its maximum period is 10 days and 10 nights. This blood in both cases is Istehadha.
NIFAAS (Bleeding After Childbirth)
Bleeding from the womb after childbirth is called NIFAAS. Its maximum period is 'FORTY DA YS and if bleeding continues for more than forty days, the extra days are not regarded as NIFAAS but ISTEHADA.
There is no minimum period for NIFFAS. It may last for either one day or a little while and sometimes a woman may not even bleed a single drop after a child is born.
